Road Trip with Camrose Rotarians - OTAXHA
On the road from Otoxha
Some students in rural Belize have to be up and on the bus by 5:15AM to attend high school, returning home at 5PM. Fortunately, many in southern Toledo, can attend the Cororcon Technical High School. This gives them hours to sleep, study and work with their family. Three years ago, the school was opened and it serves over 12 villages. The principal focus studies on rural agriculture, construction and other practical courses in addition to their regular studies.
You will find large gardens, orchards, as well as a building that is under construction. The building will be put to use on the campus when finished and another started to serve the needs of the school. Electricity to power their computers is provided by a generator due to the remote location. Access to the internet requires a satellite based ISP but that is in the future.
One of the several buildings was being used as a movie theatre when we visited. It was a fund raiser to provide much needed supplies. Students had set up another fundraiser in front of one of the class rooms, selling drinks and small cakes.
Fund raising is a common past time as the Ministry of Education is supporting over 26 schools with a BZ$1,000,000.00 (Canadian $500,000.00) budget. Eager students and families help in any way they can.
